New York Knicks are now two wins away from their first NBA championship since 1973 after surviving a dramatic late comeback attempt by the San Antonio Spurs and winning Game 2 of the 2026 NBA Finals, 105-104, on Friday night in San Antonio.
The victory gives New York a commanding 2-0 series lead as the Finals shift to Madison Square Garden for Game 3 on Monday night. Teams that take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals have historically gone on to win the championship the vast majority of the time.
Despite struggling with his shooting for much of the night, Knicks star Jalen Brunson delivered when it mattered most. Brunson hit clutch baskets and a late free throw that ultimately became the game-winning point after a crucial turnover by Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama in the closing seconds.
New York appeared to have the game under control after building a 14-point fourth-quarter advantage, but San Antonio responded with a furious 14-0 run. Wembanyama briefly put the Spurs ahead in the final minute, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. However, the Knicks answered with poise, and Wembanyama's potential game-winning attempt in the closing seconds missed the mark.
While Brunson supplied the late heroics, the Knicks received major contributions from across the roster. Karl-Anthony Towns led New York with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Mikal Bridges added 20 points. OG Anunoby chipped in 16 points as the Knicks once again displayed the balanced attack that has carried them through the playoffs.
For San Antonio, Wembanyama delivered another standout performance and nearly rescued the Spurs after a slow start. However, costly turnovers and missed opportunities proved too much to overcome as the young Spurs fell into a difficult 0-2 series hole.
The series now heads to New York, where the Knicks will host their first NBA Finals game in more than two decades. A victory in Game 3 would put New York on the brink of ending a 53-year championship drought, while the Spurs face a must-win situation to keep their title hopes alive.
