HOUSTON - NASA has announced detailed plans for establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon by 2030, marking a new era in space exploration and scientific research.
The Artemis Lunar Base program will establish a sustainable outpost near the Moon's south pole, where astronauts will conduct long-duration missions and prepare for eventual Mars exploration.
The $85 billion initiative includes partnerships with private space companies and international space agencies. The base will support up to 12 astronauts at a time and serve as a testing ground for technologies needed for deep space exploration.
'This isn't just about planting flags,' explained NASA Administrator. 'We're building the infrastructure for humanity's expansion into the solar system.'
The base will utilize lunar resources, including water ice deposits, to produce fuel and life support materials. Commercial partnerships will enable lunar mining operations and space tourism opportunities.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first long-duration crew arriving in 2030. The program is expected to create over 100,000 jobs in the aerospace sector.
