CALGARY: Prime Minister Mark Carney made a direct appeal to Albertans on Thursday, urging them to vote to stay in Canada ahead of the province's separation referendum.
"Let Alberta Lead, Not Leave"
Speaking at a Forever Canadian rally in Calgary, Carney told the crowd: "Let Alberta lead, not leave," CTV News reported. The rally was part of a two-day unity push by the prime minister ahead of the vote.
A Warning About the United States
Carney warned that the United States is trying to break Canada so it can "own us," according to the Associated Press, as reported by U.S. News. He said the separation vote comes at the worst possible time for the country.
A National Address
In a pre-referendum address covered by CBC's The National, Carney appealed to Albertans to choose Canada. Oil-rich Alberta is central to Canada's economy, and the vote has become one of the biggest tests of national unity in decades.
