Former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor on the cover of The New Dispensation. Official portrait from her public life.

After witnessing the shocking, cruel, indecent, and inhumane treatment of former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor in handcuffs, The New Dispensation strongly condemns the public humiliation inflicted upon an accomplished and respected woman who has served at the highest levels of her country.

Regardless of the allegations brought against her, Jewel Howard-Taylor is a former vice president, former senator, former first lady, mother, educator, and prominent African woman. She must be treated with the dignity and respect owed to every human being—and to someone who once occupied the second-highest office of a sovereign republic.

Criminal allegations do not erase a person's humanity. Neither an arrest nor a charge constitutes a conviction. Liberia's Constitution and the fundamental principles of justice guarantee due process and the presumption of innocence. These protections must apply equally to everyone, irrespective of political affiliation, social status, or public opinion.

The degrading display of a former vice president in restraints serves no legitimate purpose of justice. It creates the appearance of punishment before trial and risks transforming a legal proceeding into political theater and public humiliation.

State power must never be used to strip an accused person of dignity. A government demonstrates its strength not through the humiliation of those in its custody, but through its respect for the law, human rights, and due process—even when dealing with political opponents or highly controversial cases.

Our Editorial Decision

Because of the disturbing and degrading nature of the images, The New Dispensation has made an editorial decision that it will not publish or distribute photographs or videos showing former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor in handcuffs, prison clothing, a jail cell, or any other humiliating custodial condition.

When reporting on the government's actions against her, we will use dignified photographs from her public life. We refuse to turn another person's humiliation into media content, regardless of how many views, clicks, or impressions such images might generate.

"I Will Fight" — the former Vice President rejects the charges and vows to clear her name. The New Dispensation will use only dignified imagery from her public life.

This decision applies across The New Dispensation's global digital AI-powered media infrastructure, which serves 63.53 million readers, possesses a potential reach exceeding 12 billion, generates up to 60 billion impressions, and provides translation capabilities in more than 60 languages.

Our platform will not participate in diminishing the dignity of a former vice president, former senator, former first lady, mother, and respected African woman.

We are not declaring her innocent or guilty. That determination belongs to a competent court after a fair and transparent legal process. We are declaring that justice must remain justice. It must never become cruelty, vengeance, political persecution, or public spectacle.

Liberia must rise above humiliation as an instrument of governance. The country must prove that its institutions can administer justice fairly, professionally, and humanely.

Justice must be pursued—but human dignity must never be sacrificed.
