India’s economic and diplomatic posture in 2026 is marked by growing confidence. Reuters reported on July 13 that India was holding out for better terms in trade talks with the United States, reflecting a more assertive view in New Delhi about its market power, growth prospects, and geopolitical importance.
That matters because India is no longer being discussed simply as a future growth story. It is now acting more clearly like a country that believes its scale gives it bargaining room. Trade policy has become one of the clearest arenas where that confidence is visible.

Still, confidence brings its own pressure. A tougher negotiating posture must eventually produce practical gains, whether in exports, market access, or strategic positioning. India also continues to face the usual demands of a vast developing economy, where domestic delivery matters as much as international status.
For now, however, the message from New Delhi is clear: India sees itself as a country whose importance is rising, and its trade behavior is increasingly matching that ambition.
