SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers nearly let a 20-point lead slip away, but held off a furious Washington comeback to beat the Commanders 23-17 on Monday Night Football and remain the NFL's last unbeaten team at 6-0.

A dominant first half
San Francisco needed one possession to strike, as Brock Purdy found George Kittle for an opening-drive touchdown. Washington answered only with a 51-yard field goal from Drew Stevens. The 49ers controlled the half, out-gaining the Commanders 303 yards to 72 at one point and averaging 7.4 yards per play.

Kicker Pineiro pushed the lead to 23-3 with a 33-yard field goal, and the game looked over.
Washington fights back
The Commanders refused to fold. Jayden Daniels led Washington to two touchdowns in the second half to cut the deficit to six and give the visitors one last chance.
Final play
With time expiring, Daniels dropped back for a Hail Mary but was sacked before he could launch it, ending the rally.

What it means
San Francisco improves to 6-0 but faces questions about second-half lapses and depth at wide receiver. Washington falls to 1-4-1.
