WASHINGTON β With just over two weeks until the midterm elections, Americans woke up Sunday, October 18, to a busy news cycle spanning foreign policy, energy prices, a heartbreaking tragedy in Kansas and turmoil inside the White House. Here is what you need to know.
Trump's Russia sanctions pause draws fire
President Donald Trump's decision to temporarily suspend sanctions on Russian diesel deliveries dominated the Sunday shows. Energy Secretary Chris Wright argued the move actually increases pressure on the Kremlin to "tone down" its war in Ukraine, according to the New York Post.
Not everyone in the president's party agrees. On NBC's "Meet the Press," Rep. Ashley Hinson said: "We need to lower gas prices in this country, we need to lower diesel prices, but I don't think we need to be making a deal with Russia to do it."
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said U.S. intelligence sharing with Kyiv has resumed after a blackout that he said left Ukraine unable to see incoming Russian attacks.

Voters sour ahead of the midterms
A new NBC News Decision Desk poll presented by Steve Kornacki showed weak public approval of the administration on key issues, including just 34 percent approval on Iran. Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia also appeared on the program as Democrats press their case on affordability.
Tragedy at a Wichita youth soccer field
In Wichita, Kansas, a 34-year-old driver crashed a truck into a crowd at the Stryker Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon, killing two people, including 6-year-old Adrian Cole, and injuring 10 others. The driver, who has not been publicly identified, was released without charges, and authorities have not explained why. The community is demanding answers.

White House still without a press secretary
The administration is still searching for a new spokesperson after Katie Zacharia left the press secretary job on Friday, just five days after succeeding Karoline Leavitt. No replacement has been named.
