The FIFA World Cup delivered another compelling day of knockout football on Thursday, July 2, as Spain, Portugal and Switzerland each secured important victories to keep their tournament hopes alive.
Spain 3, Austria 0
Spain produced one of the strongest performances of the day with a convincing 3-0 win over Austria in Inglewood, California. Clinical in attack and composed in possession, Spain controlled the rhythm of the match and showed why it remains one of the most dangerous sides left in the competition. Austria battled to stay organized, but Spain’s quality in the final third proved too much.
Portugal 2, Croatia 1
Portugal survived a stern test from Croatia in Toronto, earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory in one of the day’s most competitive fixtures. Croatia pushed Portugal throughout the match and threatened to force the contest even deeper into drama, but Portugal held firm and found enough attacking quality to edge through. The win keeps Portugal’s title hopes alive and adds another tense chapter to its World Cup campaign.
Switzerland 2, Algeria 0
In Vancouver, Switzerland delivered a disciplined 2-0 result against Algeria. Organized at the back and efficient going forward, the Swiss side managed the occasion well and took advantage of its scoring opportunities. Algeria showed flashes of energy and determination, but Switzerland’s structure and finishing made the difference.
A day of control, resilience and momentum
Thursday’s results underscored the different ways teams can win in the World Cup knockout stage. Spain advanced with flair and authority, Portugal moved on with resilience under pressure, and Switzerland progressed through balance and discipline.
